Spring Fish Watching: Redfin Pikerel
I thought this was a young pike, but have learned it is likely a young Chain Pikerel, Esox niger floating effortlessly in Black Bayou Lake waiting for a smaller fish to come within snapping range. Photographed on Pentax K-1 with Sigma 70-300mm Zoom. C. Paxton image and copyright.
I was very excited to see this striped beauty, likely a Chain Pikerel, Esox niger. I photographed it from Pier one at Monroe, Louisiana’s Black Bayou Lake Refuge National Wildlife Refuge. These fish are ambush predators and they are capable of bursts of high speed to catch their prey of smaller fish.
