Astonished by what appeared to be a scarlet fungus, I learned later from internet research that this image shows blobs of Raspberry Slime Mould, Tubifera ferruginosa growing on a fallen tree trunk at Crawfish Springs, near Farmerville, Louisiana. A few days later they turned a dull maroon. Slime moulds are no longer classified as fungi but Protoctista.
